UBC Physics & Astronomy Presents: Metro Vancouver Physics Circle

The UBC Department of Physics & Astronomy is pleased to present the “Metro Vancouver Physics Circle”

This free program provides a unique opportunity for high school students to receive training and preparation for physics competitions and to become aware of the exhilarating world of physics!

The Circle will consist of weekly two-hour sessions (every Thursday starting at 5pm) that runs from January to March.

At the beginning of each meeting, students will be given a lecture pertaining to an interesting physics topic. During the rest of the meeting, students will work in groups and with UBC students to solve interesting and rewardingly challenging physics problems.

This program is run by undergraduate physics students who were actively involved in physics competitions during their high school years – hence this is a GREAT opportunity for high school students to make connections with and receive guidance from UBC physics students with similar interests.

As one of the purposes of the Circle is to encourage students to pursue an interest in physics competitions, numerous awards and prizes will be given out to students throughout the duration of the Circle. Pizza and refreshments will also be provided for all participants of the Circle.

33rd Annual UBC Physics Olympics

University of British Columbia

Saturday, March 12th, 2011

Teams of physics students from all over BC will meet at UBC for an all day fun PHYSICS competition – 1 team/school. Teams arrive by plane, ferry, bus and car.

A team will generally consist of five members. Smaller and large teams are welcome, but only FIVE (or fewer) members of a team will participate in a given event, each wearing the team name tag.
We plan to have six events this year, one or two of which will involve prebuilt structures.
Each participating school is asked to complete the enclosed entry form and return it, along with the $30.00 registration fee. Deadline for entries is February 15th, 2011.

UBC Physics and Astronomy Presents: WOW – Welcome Orientation for Women Event

The University of British Columbia’s Department of Physics and Astronomy will be hosting an orientation event for women interested in learning about our undergraduate programs in physics, astronomy, engineering physics, biophysics and combined physics+education. We would like to invite female high school juniors and seniors who have shown curiosity in their science classes to attend this event. We think it is useful to familiarize students with our department and degrees before they register for first year courses.

Date: Wednesday January 11, 2011
Time: 10am – 4:30pm (free lunch included)
Location: primarily Michael Smith Labs Theatre (2185 East Mall), UBC
Much more information and registration (deadline Dec. 18) is available

UBC Physics and Astronomy Presents: Show Me the Light! – The Physics of Light and Colour”

UBC 7th Annual Faraday Science Show for Children and Adults
Sunday, December 12th 2010, 2:00-3:30 pm
Hebb Theatre: 2045 East Mall (UBC Campus)

Physics of Light and Colour

Explore the physics of light and color, and discover interesting things we can do with them

Faraday Show is the Outreach Program’s annual science lecture, designed for children, and presented by UBC faculty members and students. This year, we will explore the subject of “light” –Learn how optical illusions work and how we can create lights of different colours, compare lights in reality and in computer games, and find out which type of Christmas light decorations consumes the least amount of energy. Figure out how to use light to generate electricity and check out interesting innovations by faculty members and students. This show is for children of ALL AGES, and even adults who are young at heart!

WHEN: 2-3:30pm on Sunday, December 12, 2010

COST: FREE! But bring non-perishable food items to support the Greater Vancouver Food Bank!
