BC Crystal Growing Competition

WHAT: The goal of this competition is to grow a single, well formed crystal of ALUM (aluminum potassium sulphate)

WHERE: Science World

WHEN: Saturday November 12, 2011

WHY: This competition engages students in chemistry and it is fun!

HOW: Use any methods or check the National Crystal Growing Competition website for hints.

The Vancouver Section of the Chemical Institute of Canada invites your students to participate this year in the Crystal Growing Competition. The contest is open to students from grades 8-12.

The judges will be looking for well formed single cystals (not clusters of crystals). The crystals are not judged on size alone, but also on quality so even a small crystal can achieve a high score: (note; each crystal must have a mass of 0.5 grams or more to be considered).

Please submit your Best overall Crystal(s) and your Best Quality Crystal(s) for display and judging to Science World no later than 5:00 pm on Thursday November 10th, 2011. Each Group is only allowed 5 weeks maximum to grow crystals. Your crystals should be left at the Science World Reception Centre, 1455 Quebec Street, Vancouver BC, V6A 3Z7. Each entry must be CLEARLY LABELLED with the student’s name(s), the school’s name and the name of the teacher.

The judging will take place on Saturday, November 12th, 2011 at Science World and results should be known roughly 3 pm. The winning crystals of this competition will be sent to compete in the National Crystal Growing Competition. Good luck and happy crystal growing! I look forward to receiving your entries for this year’s competition.

If you wish to participate: (I hope you do!)

1. Register NOW with your regional coordinator, Kierstan McCaw, by email (kmccaw@southridge.bc.ca) so that we know to expect your entries.

Ask for Catalogue Number 03324-310, aluminum potassium sulphate. They will ship one 500g bottle of alum directly to you. This first bottle is free but not the shipping. Provide a purchase order number from your school. The school will be invoiced $16 to cover the shipping costs. If you need more material, order it at the same time. NOTE: Due to a limited supply available, schools will be limited to one extra bottle. This second bottle will cost an additional $15.29 charge ( with no additional shipping charge). You may purchase additional supplies from your own sources.

3. Prepare your crystals. Use any method that you like to prepare the crystals. go  to the website: http://www.iyc2011.ca/index.php?ciid=2385&laid=1 (or google National Crystal Growing Competition) for help and additional information on judging. Make sure that each student group starts with no more than 100g of starting material. Make sure the teams are no larger than 3 students. Remember to adhere to the 5 weeks growing time.
